Living Beyond Myself

Asking people to do something beyond their already busy lives is a hard sell.  That is, unless they are devoted to Jesus Christ and understand His imperative to serve others.  This is the crux of living beyond ourselves.  At first we may find it difficult to carve out the time to help another, but when we do, we always feel good about it; especially, when we know that our time and resources have been a blessing to them.

In Matthew 5:42, Jesus said, "Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away."  This doesn't mean that we yield to every selfish request made of us.  The implication is that the person who is asking has a genuine need. In Philippians 2:4, Paul declared, "Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others."  The apostle John takes it a step further, "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"  (I John 3:17).

Even though you have your own burdens and responsibilities, and even though your daily tasks absorb much of your time, let us learn the benefit of living beyond ourselves and experience the joy that comes from serving others.  The motivation for us is found in Philippians 2:5, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."  I challenge you to be intentional about looking for opportunities to serve others.  You'll be glad you did!
