What Do You Want From Me?

I marvel at the number of people that frequent their churches on any given Sunday with little understanding of the expectations that God requires of them and maybe even greater ignorance of what they can expect from God.  In the final words of Matthew 5, Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect."  What does that even mean?

Perfection is impossible, but in Christ, positionally, we are already declared perfect.  We are made righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21), because God has given us His righteousness through Jesus Christ.  From a practical perspective, we are to be perfect, in the sense of spiritual maturity.  The word perfect here in the Greek is what helps us to understand that we are to be striving for spiritual maturity.

A key verse that we like to use to quote is Philippians 1:6, "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."  From this verse, many a Christian has declared they are a "work in progress."  On the one hand that is true; on the other hand, they don't see the "work" as a present reality, but only as a future state.  In other words, they are not looking to measure their current spiritual growth, only what they will become.

To help you understand and measure your spiritual growth, ask yourselves the following questions:

1.  What am I doing today to be more like Christ?
2.  In what ways is my faith increasing?
3.  Do I handle conflicts differently than I used to?  In what ways?
4.  Am I more patient toward tough circumstances?
5.  Is my desire to be in God's Word increasing?
6.  Is there a greater urgency to spend time on my knees in prayer?
7.  Do I have a greater passion to share my faith with those who do not yet know Jesus Christ?
